Kangana Ranaut Reflects on Emergency: 'Directing It Was a Mistake
11 hours ago | 5 Views
Kangana Ranaut has shared her thoughts on the drama surrounding her debut solo directorial project, Emergency. In a recent chat, she talked about the various 'mistakes' she made during the filmmaking process, like deciding to direct it on her own and going for a theatrical release rather than just dropping it on a streaming platform.
Kangana talks about the hold-up with the release of Emergency
In a chat with News18, Kangana expressed her fears about the film's release being delayed for months due to the CBFC not giving it a certification. She mentioned, “I thought it was a bad call to go for a theatrical release. I believed I could have landed a better deal on OTT. Plus, I wouldn’t have had to deal with censorship, and my film wouldn’t have been picked apart. I was unsure about what the CBFC would cut or allow us to keep.”
The Central Board for Film Certification (CBFC) is the authority that certifies all films in India, ensuring they are suitable for audiences. It operates under the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting.
Kangana talks about her experience directing Emergency
The actor-turned-director mentioned that she made a bunch of 'wrong choices' while working on the film. She shared, “I realized I messed up in several ways: first off, deciding to direct this film. I assumed that even without a Congress government… I had previously mentioned the movie Kissa Kursi Ka. No one has seen that film to this day, and back then, they destroyed all the copies. Plus, there haven’t been many films about Mrs. Gandhi. Watching Emergency, I think today’s audience will be shocked to see how she ended up like that; after all, she was PM three times. I really underestimated the situation and thought I could pull off making a film about Emergency without any issues.”
Regarding Emergency
Emergency features Kangana as Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and explores the last years of her time in office, highlighting the Emergency period and Operation Bluestar. The cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and Satish Kaushik in significant roles. After a lengthy wait, Emergency is set to hit theaters on January 17.
