Indian, the vigilante action film released in 1996 and starring Kamal Haasan in the principal role, is regarded as one of the exemplary creations of director Shankar. Following an extended hiatus, this actor-director partnership returned with the sequel, Indian 2, in 2024. Unfortunately, the second instalment did not perform well at the box office, leading to speculation that the upcoming third part, titled Indian 3, would be released directly on an OTT platform. However, director Shankar has now dispelled these rumours.

Director Shankar, who has recently begun promoting his forthcoming Telugu film Game Changer, addressed the significant failure of Indian 2. The esteemed director expressed that the overwhelmingly negative critiques directed at the vigilante action film were entirely unforeseen. He acknowledged the disappointment this brought him and noted that he has put in greater effort into both the upcoming third instalment, Indian 3, and the film featuring Ram Charan, as a result of this experience.
Indian 2 will not be released directly on OTT platforms.
In a recent media engagement, director Shankar addressed the circulating rumours regarding the potential absence of a theatrical release for Indian 3. There had been speculation that the third installment of the Kamal Haasan franchise might forgo a theatrical debut due to the significant underperformance of the second film. However, Shankar dismissed these claims and affirmed that Indian 3 is indeed set for a major theatrical release in 2025. Further updates on this matter are anticipated shortly.
