Kaiva, helmed by Jayathirtha Jayanna and featuring Dhanveerah and Megha Shetty in the main roles, is a romantic drama set in the 1980s, inspired by real-life events. The film explores the challenges faced by a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl as they navigate their interfaith relationship and strive to achieve their lifelong dreams together. The story is based on a true couple, as mentioned by the director. It hit theaters in December 2023 but received negative reviews and struggled at the box office, later making its way to Amazon Prime Video in February 2024.

Kaiva is on her way to Sun NXT now

The movie isn't on the platform anymore, but starting February 28, you can catch it on Sun NXT for streaming. The platform teased, “A storm is about to hit.” While Kaiva was promoted as a deep love story, it got an A rating due to its heavy violence. The director explained that the conflict between the two religious groups needed to be shown realistically, not lightly.

The film's backdrop in the 80s really let Jayathirtha take viewers back to a lively era in Bengaluru's past, showcasing its infamous underworld. Besides the violence, the portrayal of the well-known Karaga festival stood out as a key moment in Kaiva.

In a chat with OTTplay, Jayathirtha mentioned that the passion with which the real-life couple fought for their love, and the fact that they’re still going strong after 40 years, is what attracted him to the story. “Their dedication to stay together through all the challenges really grabbed my interest,” he shared.

Kaiva marked the final theatrical release for Dhanveerah and Megha. Dhanveerah is set to appear next in Vamana, scheduled for April 10, 2025, while Megha has several projects in the pipeline, including Vinay Rajkumar’s Gramayana, which are at different stages of production.
