After a lot of back-and-forth, Junaid Khan’s debut film Maharaj is finally out on OTT. The film is out on Netflix as on Friday, June 21. The original release date for the movie was June 13, but the release of the film was stalled. Now, more than a week later, the film is finally out for viewing.

Maharaj out on Netflix

Maharaj, featuring Aamir Khan’s son Junaid Khan alongside Jaideep Ahlawat and Shalini Pandey, is out on Netflix right after the court cleared the movie for release. The film is directed by Siddharth P. Malhotra of Rani Mukerji’s Hichki fame.

Clean chit from High court

Gujarat High court has finally given Maharaj a clean chit, stating that it does not hurt religious sentiments. The earlier claim was that the movie might hurt sentiments of the Pushtimargi and Vaishnavite community. Thus, the interim granted on June 13 was vacated, and the movie could be released any time the makers wished to.

YRF-Netflix had challenged stay order

YRF and Netflix had challenged the stay order on Maharaj a day after the release was stalled. A reputed, veteran trade source stated, “YRF and Netflix are challenging the Stay order. The matter is in court. Maharaj is based on a real-life case. It is adapted from Saurabh Shah's book titled Maharaj. The author has also come out to say that the film does not vilify the Vaishnav community or the religion. It is about a social reformer, who brought about a positive change in society. The makers are hopeful for a positive outcome on this.”

About the film

Maharaj is based on the 2013 book which was penned by Gujarati writer Saurabh Shah. The book took on the 1862 case filed by Jadunathji (a leading Vaishnavite figure). He had petitioned against social reformer Karsandas Mulji. The latter was against sexual exploitation by the all-powerful Maharaj.
