Marvel Cinematic Universe's Phase V is nearing its conclusion with the upcoming release, Thunderbolts. The movie, which follows up from Black Widow and Falcon and the Winter Soldier, is intended to establish the next phase of the MCU. Central to that establishment is the character Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the cunning counterpart to Nick Fury. Prior to the release, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who portrays Val in the MCU, discusses her role and more.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus on her Thunderbolts character
Thunderbolts suggests that Valentina has not only taken the place of Nick Fury but also of Tony Stark. The latest promos depict her asserting authority in the Avengers Tower (ominously referred to as the Watchtower now). When asked if she embodies a blend of the two legendary characters, Julia replies, "I think you’re spot on. That’s why it was fun to play her; we haven’t seen a character like this in the MCU. She is a complicated, maybe shady, maybe not person. You don’t know if she is telling the truth or not. The mystery around her is a delicious area to play in. "
Can Elaine from Seinfeld be a Marvel villain?
Julia Louis first rose to prominence in the early '90s portraying Elaine Benes on Seinfeld. When asked how the morally complex Elaine would fit into the MCU, she laughs and replies, "She would be a villain, and then she wouldn't survive beyond the first storyline she appeared in. Someone would eliminate her, and that would be the end. " And what would happen if Elaine ever encounters Valentina in the narrative? "Val would squash her like a bug," Julia exclaims.
