Joker: Folie à Deux has finally arrived on OTT platforms in India after an extended wait. Following its theatrical release, the film directed by Todd Phillips became available for rent on Prime Video, and it is now streamable on JioHotstar. The screenplay, penned by Scott Silver, presents a legal drama jukebox musical featuring Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker and Lady Gaga as Harley "Lee" Quinzel, marking this sequel to the 2019 film Joker. The supporting cast includes Brendan Gleeson, Catherine Keener, Zazie Beetz, Steve Coogan, Harry Lawtey, and Leigh Gill.

Arthur Fleck's story continues in Arkham

During his time awaiting trial at Arkham State Hospital, Arthur develops romantic feelings for a fellow inmate in the film. Joker: Folie à Deux portrays Arthur Fleck's experience in Arkham Asylum as he faces prosecution for the offenses he committed while embodying the Joker. In this setting, Arthur not only finds the love of his life but also uncovers the music that resides within him as he navigates the complexities of his dual identity.

Box office failure and critical reception

At the 81st Venice International Film Festival in 2024, Joker: Folie à Deux made its world premiere. It was released in theaters throughout the United States on October 4, 2024. The film underperformed at the box office, generating only $207.5 million worldwide against a production budget estimated between $190 million and $200 million. Additionally, critics expressed their disappointment with the film.

Characters highlights

Portrayed by Phoenix, Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, is a nihilistic criminal grappling with mental illness. His background as a disadvantaged party clown and a hopeful stand-up comedian shapes his clown persona. Although the film explores the depths of his psyche, Phillips asserts that Arthur will not transform into the "Clown Prince of Crime," as his Joker identity serves as an unwelcome emblem to those who provide the affection he has long sought.

Harley "Lee" Quinzel, portrayed by Lady Gaga, is a patient at Arkham State Hospital who develops an unhealthy infatuation with Arthur, leading to a romantic relationship. Phillips noted that this iteration of Lee is characterized by a more grounded, manipulative, and immoral nature; the film Joker (2019) intentionally avoids many of Lee's traditional traits and styles in favor of its own narrative framework. In Gaga's perspective, Lee embodies a study of contradictions, as her complex feelings towards Arthur oscillate between admiration and revulsion, encompassing both honesty and deceit, as well as a sense of danger coupled with a lack of overt aggression. Gaga describes Lee as a "very nonlinear person," suggesting that, like all individuals involved in storytelling, the more authentic Lee appears, the more she embodies contradiction.
