The world has been obsessing over the trailer and promotional material for Joker: Folie à Deux, also known as Joker 2. Over the past few weeks, and especially yesterday, the movie has become the talk of the town since premieres have begun, with reviews and Rotten Tomatoes scores circulating. Starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, it is certainly one of the most anticipated movies of the year, and early reviews suggest it is equally exciting. However, the curiosity isn't just about the release of Joker 2—fans are also wondering if a Joker 3 is in the works. Unfortunately, if Todd Phillips, the director of both films, is to be believed, there are no plans for a third installment. The filmmaker has definitively dashed those hopes. 

No Joker 3 Not Happening

To give you an idea, Todd Phillips recently addressed the possibility of a Joker 3, preparing us for the disappointing news. Yet, as hopeful fans, we thought it could be a hoax or that the filmmaker might be trying to hide a surprise. However, it turns out Todd is serious—there is no future for the franchise beyond Joker: Folie à Deux because the story, according to him, is now complete. Read on to find out more.

According to Comic Book Movie, Todd Phillips explained that Joker: Folie à Deux will be the last solo film in this storyline starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga. There are no plans for a revival because the story is finished. "The last day on this one was very different because we were in New York shooting on the stairs with 8,000 paparazzi people," he said. "It was a very frustrating day, so we all wanted to get the hell out of there. But we then had this little get-together downtown at my friend's bar, and it was actually really beautiful. Joaquin, Gaga, and everybody were there, and of course, the crew."

Todd Phillips subtly indicated that this is where the story concludes and that audiences will understand once they see the movie. He added, "Again, you'll see the movie, and you'll go, 'Oh, I get it. The story is told.'" In other words, this is where the narrative ends. This isn't good news for fans who were eagerly awaiting an update on Joker 3.

Joker: Folie à Deux Box Office Predictions

As we approach the release date of Joker: Folie à Deux—October 4, 2024, for the West, and October 2, 2024, for India—early box office estimates have started rolling in. According to Shawn Robbins of Box Office Theory, the movie is projected to earn $150 million in the domestic market. These are impressive numbers, especially considering the lingering effects of the post-pandemic box office slump. It also surpasses the opening of the first film, which had a $96 million domestic opening and eventually grew significantly. The film is expected to enjoy an opening between $120 million and $150 million.
