It's been 21 years since Sujoy Ghosh made his directorial debut with Jhankaar Beats. The 2003 musical comedy had an ensemble cast including Juhi Chawla, Sanjay Suri, Rahul Bose, debutant Shayan Munshi, Rinke Khanna, and Riya Sen. In honour of R. D. Burman, this film tells a tale of friendship, love, and music. As the film completes 21 years of release, you can stream it on Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, SonyLIV (OTTplay Premium), and Lionsgate Play (OTTplay Premium).

Jhankaar Beats plot synopsis

In the film, after two defeats, two bandmates and copywriters (Suri and Bose) decide to enlist the help of their boss' kid (Munshi) in order to win an annual pop song contest. As they work through their own problems as well as those at work, three friends and bandmates train for a music competition they've always wanted to win.

Vishal-Shekhar composed the film's music, while Vishal Dadlani penned the lyrics. Songs performed by Shaan and KK, Tu Aashiqui Hai and Suno Na, respectively, proved successful and are among many Bollywood music lovers' playlists.

Sujoy Ghosh's directorial journey

Earlier, during an interaction with Hindustan Times, Sunjoy Ghosh spoke about his directorial debut, stating that from how to use a lens to mounting the camera on a trolley and panning it, he was always learning new things while filming the film. Upon returning home from work, the filmmaker would immerse himself in reading. It meant a lot to Ghosh that the crew was just as encouraging as the actors. In short, he picked up most of what he needed to know while working. The director still treasures the memory of making it because he loved every step of the process. Additionally, Ghosh received four credits for the film—writer, director, screenplay, and story—which is excellent for a first-timer.

No banner, regardless of its popularity or impending release, expressed interest in his film. Being a novice likely made the filmmaker clumsy when he attempted to explain his strategy. However, meeting the majority of them merely served to provide a foundation for the connections.
