Aamir Khan is definitely a standout name in today's Bollywood scene when it comes to taking risks with his film choices. Over the years, he has gifted India some truly remarkable films, and his body of work showcases incredible artistry and skill. Two of his most iconic films are Lagaan and Rang De Basanti, with one directed by Ashutosh Gowariker and the other by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra—both are now considered classics. But here's a twist: Javed Akhtar actually warned Aamir not to take on these projects. Keep reading to find out more about this interesting backstory.

Javed Akhtar's take on Lagaan

This morning, Aamir Khan and Javed Akhtar kicked off the Aamir Khan: Cinema Ka Jadugar film festival in the city. During the event, they had a lively chat about their films, their thoughts on them, and Aamir’s journey in the industry. Javed Akhtar shared that he was initially skeptical about Aamir taking on roles in Lagaan and Rang De Basanti, even going so far as to list out issues he had with the Lagaan script.

He mentioned, "I know I’m taking a risk here, but I’ve been right before. I was the one who predicted Aamir would become a superstar, even when Amitabh Bachchan was going through a rough patch. I see the same potential in Aamir’s upcoming film, which I believe will resonate with everyone and be a massive hit. While legends like Manmohan, Salim-Javed, and Yash Chopra have had their successes, they mostly stuck to one genre. Aamir’s unique talent lies in his willingness to invest in unconventional films."

Javed Akhtar shared that he was initially against Aamir Khan taking on Lagaan. “I really didn’t want him to do it at first. I tried to talk him out of it and even made a list of all the issues I saw with the script,” Akhtar remembered. “It had a village hero, a guy in a dhoti, cricket as the main theme, and songs that only focused on whether it would rain. But eventually, I let it go. I understood that the film needed to be Aamir’s vision, and when I saw the first cut, I was completely amazed.”

Aamir Khan really knows how to pick his films, right? He said, “Not everyone makes movies like Taare Zameen Par or takes on roles in Dangal. In Rang De Basanti, he was the one in the background, letting others shine. Only Aamir could see the potential in those characters and stories.”

You can catch Lagaan on Amazon Prime Video, and Rang De Basanti is up on Netflix. Keep an eye on OTTplay for all the latest updates on streaming and films!
