Saiju Kurup is currently regarded as one of Malayalis' favourite actors due to his performances in several feel-good dramas and family entertainers. The actor, who has a packed schedule for 2024, was most recently featured in Jai Mahendran, Sony LIV's first original Malayalam web series. In a conversation with OTTplay, Saiju talks about how disappointing it may be for good films to not play in theatres successfully and how he's considered changing careers at one point.

'My film choices are not wrong'

The Abraham Ozler star stated that selecting scripts that primarily amuse him is his first priority, leaving the rest up to his intuition. "My film selections are not incorrect, but occasionally, for a variety of reasons, even excellent stuff does not do well in theatres," he stated. Saiju continued by saying that although there have been times when he has been disappointed and considered choosing a different career path, his friends in the industry have been encouraging.

The actor said, "We can only make good films; we can't make hits or flops." Producing entertainment in any genre is Saiju's main priority, he stated as he made his production debut with the recently released Bharathanatyam, which is now streaming on Amazon Prime Video and Manorama Max.

'Burden of expectations comparatively more now'

Saiju noted that there is a noticeable increase in audience expectations these days. "While working on my debut movie, Mayookham, I had no inhibitions. I chose to pursue a career in film two or three years after this movie came out, which is when my doubts and attempts to impress people started," he remarked.

The actor went on to say that he continued to work on films regardless of the type of scripts he was first given in order to overcome his stage fright and hone his acting abilities. He said, "I want to try different genres, and I don't want to be typecast, but sometimes things don't work out the way we want them to."
