Legacy shows that have entertained fans for decades are indeed special. They have the potential to become the biggest IPs, considering they have kept audiences invested for 10 years or more. The Vampire Diaries is one such show that offered a complete package to viewers and maintained its appeal, with fans still eagerly waiting for more content from the realm that started in Mystic Falls.

It's been a while since the last spin-off, Legacies, which was introduced to the world in 2018. However, there hasn't been any update on a possible future for the franchise for some time. But is a reboot of The Vampire Diaries now possible, considering it's been over half a decade since the original show wrapped up? Series co-creator Julie Plec recently addressed this question.

Is The Vampire Diaries Reboot Possible?

For the uninitiated, The Vampire Diaries debuted on September 10, 2009, and ran for eight seasons on The CW until 2017. But that wasn’t the end. The show branched out into two spin-offs. The first, The Originals, focused on the Original Vampire family and was released in 2013, running for five seasons. The second, Legacies, told the story of Hope, the daughter of Klaus Mikaelson (the original vampire), and was introduced in 2018, running for four seasons. Since then, there has been radio silence on the on-screen future of the franchise.

Series co-creator Julie Plec recently spoke about her interest in keeping The Vampire Diaries franchise alive, without letting it fade into oblivion. However, instead of rebooting the original show, Plec mentioned their preference for creating something new and substantial from the franchise. She expressed the desire to explore a new direction rather than merely revisiting something that has already worked.

"I think there are ways to keep the universe alive without having to go back and start over," Plec said, as per Deadline. "So, if somebody were to ask me my preference, I would definitely want to go in a different direction. But I think it is a testament to all these shows and the mark that they made in the moment of pop culture, in that moment in time, to the fan base that has aged up an entire generation and still wants more, and to the new fans that have been able to discover it."

Nina Dobrev & Paul Wesley on The Vampire Diaries Reboot

Nina Dobrev, Paul Wesley, and Ian Somerhalder played the three main leads of The Vampire Diaries, portraying Elena Gilbert, Stefan Salvatore, and Damon Salvatore, respectively. While talking about a possible reboot of the show, Nina Dobrev mentioned she remains close with her co-stars and would be open to returning, but not for a reboot.

"Oh, my goodness, I think it's way too soon to be talking about a reboot, because it didn't even end that long ago," Dobrev said, according to Comicbook. "But I'm very close with Paul [Wesley], Kayla [Ewell], Candice [Accola], Kat [Graham], and the list goes on because it was such a big part of our lives for so many years. So, it's hard not to stay in touch with everybody and see them when we can."

Meanwhile, Paul Wesley has a completely different perspective. The actor, who played Stefan Salvatore, doesn't want to reprise his role and has moved on entirely. He believes that eight years was enough time to play that part and doesn’t want to get repetitive with it.

The Vampire Diaries, along with all eight seasons, is available to stream on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video in India. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more information on this and everything else from the world of streaming and films.
