Lately, there have been whispers that H Vinoth’s upcoming film, Thalapathy 69, featuring Vijay, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju, is actually a remake of the 2023 Telugu movie Bhagavanth Kesari, which starred Balakrishna, Kajal Aggarwal, and Sreeleela. The speculation got even murkier when actor VTV Ganesh and director Anil Ravipudi spoke at a recent event for Sankranthiki Vasthunam.

Is Thalapathy 69 a remake?

At the event, Ganesh mentioned he had something crucial to share before leaving the stage. He revealed, “Vijay told me he’s seen Bhagavanth Kesari five times, really enjoyed it, and wants Anil to direct it. But when they reached out to him, he said he wouldn’t do a remake. Vijay has four or five big directors lined up for my last film, yet he still declined.”

Anil jumped in to clarify, “I never said I wouldn’t do it. There was a different conversation.” Ganesh pointed out that he was just sharing what he was told, adding, “I mentioned I watched Bhagavanth Kesari because I’m also in this film (Sankranthiki Vasthunam). I thought he did an amazing job.”

Anil felt Ganesh’s comments needed more context. He took the mic and explained, “What he meant is that Vijay garu is currently working on a film that hasn’t been announced yet, so it’s not the right time to discuss it. He was just saying I had some talks with Tamil superstar Vijay about his final film. There were some scheduling issues. Vijay called me with a lot of respect…”

When Ganesh tried to jump in again, Anil wrapped it up by saying, “Yes, we talked, but that’s a different discussion. I’ve worked with many heroes, but Vijay garu is the best I’ve ever met. Even while he was filming Varisu, I collaborated with Vamsi (Paidipally) garu on a few scenes. I know how much he values directors. Once they announce what Thalapathy 69 is, we can discuss it further.”

Even though there were hints that Thalapathy 69 could be a remake of Bhagavanth Kesari, fans were left puzzled by Anil’s evasiveness about what really went down and why he wasn’t directing it. Some fans even shared a funny scene from Nelson Dilipkumar’s Beast where Ganesh gets teased for spilling secrets.

Thalapathy 69 is being called Vijay’s final movie before he dives into politics. It features a star-studded cast including Bobby Deol, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, Narain, Priyamani, Monisha Blessy, and Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. Filming kicked off in 2024, and it’s set to hit theaters later this year.
