Suzhal The Vortex, a creation of Pushkar and Gayatri, has now completed two seasons. It stands as one of the pioneering long-format narratives to successfully navigate the Tamil entertainment landscape, finding its platform on Prime Video. The crime drama features prominent performances by actors Kathir and Aishwarya Rajesh in leading roles, with the second season recently released on the streaming service. As numerous reviews begin to surface, it is pertinent to evaluate which season presented a more compelling storytelling technique.

What is Suzhal 1 and Suzhal 2 all about?

Directed by the duo Pushkar and Gayatri, who also serve as showrunners for both seasons, Suzhal The Vortex is characterized as a murder mystery drama set in a small village during a significant local festival.

For those unfamiliar, Suzhal 1 centers around the Mayanakolai festival in Sambaloor village. Just days before the celebration, a young girl named Nila goes missing, prompting her family to search for her. Aishwarya Rajesh portrays her elder sister Nandini, while Kathir plays the role of SI Sakkarai, who is investigating the case. A major plot twist reveals that Nandini and Nila were victims of abuse by their uncle Guna (Ilango Kumaravel), who is ultimately killed by Nandini in the climax of Suzhal 1.

In Suzhal 2, Pushkar and Gayatri continue with the characters of Sakkarai and Nandini, shifting the narrative to Kaalipattinam as it prepares for the Ashtakaali festival. With Nandini imprisoned for Guna's murder, Sakkarai collaborates with lawyer Chellappa (Lal) to secure her release. The season opens with the murder of Chellappa at his cottage. As suicide is ruled out, a young girl named Muthu (Gouri Kishan) is discovered hiding in a cupboard with a firearm. Complicating matters further, after Muthu is taken into custody, seven other girls also confess to the murder of Chellappa.

Is Suzhal The Vortex season 2 better than Suzhal 1?

The inaugural season was celebrated not only for its high production quality but also for its ability to keep viewers in suspense regarding the identity of the true perpetrator. The plot twists were compelling, and the series provided a refreshing alternative amidst the plethora of crime dramas available to audiences.

In contrast, Suzhal 2 features a larger ensemble cast and benefits from the favorable reception of its predecessor. While the foundational structure remains intact with the introduction of new characters and narratives, the storyline often resorts to simplistic choices and convenient writing. The climax reveals that the eight girls did not murder Chellappa, their guardian who had rescued them from a child trafficking operation. Instead, it is revealed that local police officer Moorthy (Saravanan), who assisted Sakkarai, is the actual murderer. Moorthy is depicted as an accomplice and illicit lover of an MLA’s widow, who is currently imprisoned yet enjoys a life of luxury. Portrayed as a successful entrepreneur who supports many, she and Moorthy are implicated in a human trafficking scheme that lures young girls away from their families. This conclusion feels predictable, as the character development fails to convincingly mislead the audience.

Furthermore, the series suffers from the underutilization of its extensive cast, and the introduction of numerous characters diminishes the core essence of Suzhal. Nonetheless, Suzhal 2 still offers some engaging elements and commendable performances.

Both seasons of Suzhal are available for streaming on Prime Video.
