While the sequel to the hit film was, of course, expected to earn big, no one anticipated it would be on its way to grossing a billion dollars. The Pixar movie, which features a grown-up protagonist and introduces a new set of emotions alongside the old ones, was one of the most anticipated movies of the year. Now that fans have embraced the sequel and are obsessing over it, they are eagerly waiting for the studio to announce a third movie, hoping to find out how long the wait will be. It turns out the makers have now revealed their plans for the third movie in the franchise.

Can Inside Out 3 Happen?

According to the latest reports, there is an update on what's happening with Inside Out 3 at Pixar. Pixar executive Pete Docter, in a conversation with Fandango, revealed that they're "thinking of ideas" for where the third film in the franchise could go, and they have a lot to explore and play with. This news comes as a relief for fans, offering hope that a threequel might indeed be on the horizon. Read on to learn more.

"We're in the same place we were after [Inside Out]," Docter said. "We're just like, 'Okay, well if we were going to do something, what would it be?' And we're kind of just thinking of ideas. Who knows?" Considering the gap between the first two films was almost a decade—nine years, to be precise—we shouldn't expect the third film to roll out immediately.

Docter also explained how ideas from both Inside Out and Inside Out 2 could be incorporated into Inside Out 3. He mentioned that there's still much more to explore, as they have only scratched the surface with the first two films. "I would love for it to feel as though out of this vast world we only saw like three percent, and the rest of it is still out there," Docter said. "So, there's a lot to explore, a lot of things that we played with in the first movie or the second movie that didn't work for story reasons—[they] didn't fit thematically—so we have a lot to play with."
