Is ‘Hotel Reverie’ the Best Black Mirror Episode Yet? Cast and Ending Explained
10 days ago | 5 Views
The third episode of Black Mirror season 7, titled 'Hotel Reverie,' serves as a spiritual successor to the third season's 'San Junipero,' as both episodes explore themes of queer romance. In this installment, Hollywood star Brandy, portrayed by Issa Rae, is transported to an alternate reality through an immersive AI adaptation of a classic British film. To return home, she must adhere strictly to the script. This alternate dimension is created by 'Redream,' a company that reconstructs characters and narratives from Hollywood films, allowing users to engage with AI versions of these figures within their dream simulations.
In this reimagined version of her beloved film, Hotel Reverie, Brandy takes on the role of Alex Palmer, a gender-swapped protagonist. The film also features her idol, Dorothy Chambers, played by Emma Corrin, as her love interest, Clara Ryce-Lechere. However, due to unforeseen technical difficulties, Clara discovers not only that Brandy is a fictional construct but also that she is portrayed by the closeted actress Dorothy.

What happens at the end?
The AI entity known as Clara gradually attains self-awareness throughout the episode. Despite being reset by Kimmy, the representative from Redream (portrayed by Awkwafina), Clara continues to remember a pivotal moment when Brandy referred to her as Dorothy. This recollection serves as a significant turning point in her journey, prompting Clara to seek an escape from her narrative, even at the cost of her own life.
Conversely, Brandy does not respond positively to Clara's transformation into Dorothy. Unlike self-aware Clara, Brandy is bound by the necessity of survival and the need to exit the dream. She fears that if Clara comprehends the true nature of their bond, it will lead her to believe she is ensnared in a simulation, thereby eliminating any possibility of a shared reality.
In the climax of the reimagined film, Clara unexpectedly shoots her husband, an act that deviates from the original plot, and she is subsequently injured after firing at a detective. Brandy, hesitant to abandon Clara within the simulation, struggles to articulate her final words but ultimately manages to do so as Clara passes away in her embrace. Brandy then awakens from the simulation into the real world, still disoriented by the events that transpired.
