Director Kanu Behl recently shared insights regarding the inspiration for his latest film, Despatch. He attributed the tragic assassination of journalist Gauri Lankesh in 2016 as the catalyst for this narrative. He remarked, "Upon learning about Gauri Lankesh's murder, the initial concept for the story emerged."

Behl further explained, "The film centres on a crime journalist named Joy, who is in a frantic race against time to uncover a significant story. Throughout his journey, he encounters various uncertainties and obstacles. The concept for this narrative originated in 2016, shortly after I completed writing Agra, as I was considering my next steps, especially concerning funding. It was during this period that I came across the news of Gauri Lankesh’s tragic murder, which profoundly affected me. This is where the initial idea took root."

The story of Despatch centres on seasoned crime reporter Joy Bag (Manoj Bajpayee), who was once a formidable presence in the newsroom but now teeters on the edge of irrelevance in an age increasingly ruled by digital media. In his quest to restore his significance and mend his troubled personal life, he chooses to undertake a perilous adventure through the vibrant streets of Mumbai.
