IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack follows the longest hijacking saga in Indian aviation history. Set in 1999, five attackers hijacked a passenger plane from Kathmandu to Delhi and re-routed several times — eventually landing in Taliban-controlled territory, Kandahar. However, the series fell into a big controversy for changing hijackers' characters into Hindi names. Now, the content Vice President of Netflix India, Monika Shergill stated that the disclaimer has been updated to include the real and code names of the hijackers after she met with the Information and Broadcasting Secretary.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack's disclaimer has been updated

Netflix India's content Vice President shared in a statement, "For the benefit of audiences unfamiliar with the 1999 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight 814, the opening disclaimer has been updated to include the real and code names of the hijackers."

She further added that the code names in the series reflect those used during the actual event. India has a rich culture of storytelling and we are committed to showcasing these stories and their authentic representation.

Netflix promises to be 'sensitive' towards nation's sentiments

Amid the ongoing controversy, Netflix has promised that they will review their future content so that it does not hurt national sentiments.

As per an ANI report, the government sources stated, "Nobody has the right to play with the sentiments of the people of this nation. India’s culture and civilization should always be respected. You should think before portraying something in a wrong manner. The government is taking it very seriously."

Complaint against IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack

According to the reports, a farmer and president of Hindu Sena, Surjit Singh Yadav, filed a PIL against the makers of the web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack on September 2. The complainant has urged the Centre and Maharashtra government to ban the series.

“The distortion of crucial facts about the real identities of the hijackers not only misrepresents historical events but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and misinformation, warranting interference of this court to prevent further public misunderstanding and potential harm,” the petition read.

Meanwhile, the cast of the series includes Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, Patralekhaa, Pankaj Kapur, and others.
