Anubhav Sinha's web series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack faced criticism for changing the names of terrorists who hijacked the Indian Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Delhi in December 1999. Regarding this, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has summoned Netflix India's Head of Content amid row over the series.

ANI reported that the content head of Netflix India has been summoned tomorrow (September 3) by the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting over the 'IC814' web series content row. 

Netizens started a trend on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) calling for a boycott of the series, which depicts the week-long heist that resulted in the Indian government releasing three Pakistani terrorists, including Masood Azhar, in exchange for the passengers.

Five persons who hijacked the aircraft were Ibrahim Athar, Shahid Akhtar Sayed, Sunny Ahmed Qazi, Mistri Zahoor Ibrahim, and Shakir. However, the series used Hindu names like ‘Shankar’ and ‘Bhola,’ and names such as ‘Chief,' ‘Doctor’, and ‘Burger.’

Meanwhile, journalist Neelesh Misra, who wrote the book on which the Netflix project is based, and Mukesh Chhabra, the show's casting director, have both stated that these were nicknames used by the hijackers for each other.

IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack follows the longest hijacking saga in Indian aviation history. Set in 1999, five attackers hijacked a passenger plane from Kathmandu to Delhi and re-routed several times — eventually landing in Taliban-controlled territory, Kandahar.
