House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 Ending Explained: Is King Aegon II alive?

The world is not even closely prepared for what the team of House Of The Dragon has created under the able leadership of Ryan Condal. While the season was all about the aftermath of the killing of Lucerys at the hands of Aemond and Vhagar, the focus shifted to a mistake that killed the heir to King Aegon and what that meant for the two parties that were at war. Rage is now in both the parties, the Greens and the Blacks, especially after the third episode where Rhaenyra now has her reason to go to war after avoiding it for a long time, even when she was the one to lose her son first in this bloody war. So House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 came in with a whole lot of drama as the Dance Of The Dragons has now begun with three factions fighting over the Rook’s Rest castle, and below is everything you should know about the same.

So Episode 4 of House Of The Dragon Season 2 came in with the news that Alicent Hightower is pregnant, with no points for guessing, Ser Criston Cole’s child. She aborts it, and the episode moves to King Aegon II’s recklessness, who is not happy with Aemond plotting a plan with Cole without his permission. Soon we see Aemond show Aegon his place at the council, and Alicent making him understand his job only to rub his ego the wrong way. He is now a drunk king setting out with his dragon Sunfyre to a war where even his men are unaware that the king is just about to randomly join.

House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 4 Ending Explained:

Princess Rhaenys & Meleys For The Win & Death

There is so much nuance in everything about Princess Rhaenys in episode 4 as we see her convince her husband Corlys Velaryon to come to Dragonstone, to deciding to go to war, to flying over Rook's Rest to weaken Criston Cole’s hold over the army and killing most of them with her dragon Meleys. Together, Rhaenys and Meleys have seen wars and are veterans of them. She charges at Sunfyre and Aegon and Meleys easily defeats them only to find Aemond and Vhagar on their back. She even saves herself and Meleys from that attack where Aegon and Sunfyre fall to the ground. But she is Rhaenys, and that too with Meleys. Together, they have never abandoned a war halfway. They charge back like true queens and even defeat Vhagar for a bit before he charges back in hindsight.

We see the Queen Who Never Was fall to the ground as Meleys looks at her with an emotional gaze as life slowly drains out of her. They fall on Rook's Rest and die. This is going to be a very wild twist in the events of House Of The Dragon Season 2. Because Corlys Velaryon is a strong ally to Rhaenyra and he was there only because of his wife. Now with her death, he will be angry and may leave the Blacks. However, Rhaenys was the strongest rider and Meleys the biggest and oldest dragon Rhaenyra had, which means they have suffered a big blow.

Did Aemond Try To Kill Aegon Twice?

While Aegon and Rhaenys battled with Sunfyre and Meleys, while the latter was defeating the former, we see Aemond entering with Vhagar. He looks at the situation and knows Aegon is in the way to Rhaenys. He still orders Vhagar to spit fire and ends up grilling Sunfyre and Aegon who fall to the ground. While this can be seen as a mistake that Vhagar is known for making, how does one describe the last scene? When Ser Criston Cole reaches the forest in search of King Aegon II, he sees a lifeless King fallen between the wings of Sunfyre who is counting his last breaths too. But wait, has Aemond drawn his sword to kill Aegon? Cole’s arrival stops him. He points at Aegon and leaves the frame.

It is no surprise that Aemond is not really fond of Aegon, who has been sitting on his nerves for a long while now. But will he end up killing his brother, the king, at the risk of being called the Kingslayer? Well, only the coming episodes will tell. But is Aegon alive? The promos hint at him being brought back to King's Landing in a box-like structure. There is no clarity on whether he is alive or not. But according to the books, he is heavily wounded. The makers of House Of The Dragon have indeed taken liberties, so you never know.
