The way House Of The Dragon has shaped up into a series of mistakes that lead to the biggest war that the Gods and Humans had ever seen until then is very fascinating. Aemond killed Lucerys, Aegon took the throne promised to Rhaenyra, Blood & Cheese killed Jaehaerys when they were hired to kill Aemond, and all of this gave birth to an enmity only war can bring redemption to. But there is always an attempt at peace and to restore it if there is room, and that is what the third episode of House Of The Dragon Season 2 meant. Yes, there was Daemon, his regret, the prophecy, and much more, but the undertone was that of Rhaenyra coming to terms with the fact that she cannot hold back the dragons from unleashing for long and that she needs one good reason to go to war now that sons have been lost on both ends. 

House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 3 Ending Explained

SPOILERS AHEAD! You have been warned. So when Rhaenys told Rhaenyra that men are always hungry for war, but Alicent Hightower is their last hope to stop the doom from coming, it did ring some bells in Rhaenyra’s head. She has been friends with Alicent for life, best friends for that matter, because Hightower married her father and they gave birth to sons. This leads to Rhaenyra now thinking of meeting Alicent. But how will she penetrate King's Landing after all that has happened and been felt by the people on both sides?

She now decides to disguise herself as a Septa and meet Alicent. When they meet, their conversation drifts to the last moment of King Viserys, Rhaenyra’s father and Alicent’s husband. We are soon told how Viserys, in his last moment, was talking about Aegon The Conqueror’s dream and the prophecy where he spoke of the Promised Prince. But Alicent, who didn't know the prophecy, misunderstood it for Viserys changing his plan and making Aegon the king. However, Rhaenyra in this scene reminds Alicent that it was a story that her father told her and not an indication to make Aegon the king.

Realizing her mistake, Alicent is now aware that she is on the wrong side of things. But what flips the game of House Of The Dragon is her also realizing that she has come too far in this mess and now there is no way she can undo it all. Alicent knows the war is inevitable and ends up making things clear for Rhaenyra unknowingly. This means Rhaenyra now has a reason to fight and also has clarity on what exactly happened in the last moments of her dear father and the coronation of Aegon as the King Of The Seven Kingdoms.

House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 3 Director Says…

Director Geeta Vasant Patel, who directed House Of The Dragon Season 2 Episode 3, has spoken about the climax to Screenrant. Talking about the same she said, “In my mind, and this is what Emma [D'Arcy] and I talked about, she's there because her dad walked down that aisle in episode 8 and told her, "I love you, and I choose you." He had not chosen her before; nobody had chosen Rhaenyra. That was a big moment for her, and now everything that happened is thrown away because apparently he said, "No, no, I take that back. It's not her. It's this other guy." Rhaenyra was there to ask, "Did my father love me? Did he lie to me?" And that's what that moment's about. That's where, in the scene, you'll see that's where Rhaenyra is most emotional.”
