Hemanth M Rao Breaks Down Agnyathavasi’s Opening Weekend Footfalls: Organic Success or Underwhelming?
8 days ago | 5 Views
Agnyathavasi, directed by Hemanth M Rao, hit theaters on April 11, just a day after several other films like Good Bad Ugly, Jaat, Jack, Bazooka, Maranamass, and Alappuzha Gymkhana were released. With Janardhan Chikkanna, known for Gultoo, at the helm and Hemanth backing the project, the film features Rangayana Raghu in the lead role. Following his performance in Shakhaahaari, Raghu has gained a fresh fan base, which contributed to the decent buzz surrounding Agnyathavasi before its release.

When the movie was released, it received mostly positive reviews from both critics and audiences. However, in its first three days, Agnyathavasi only attracted about 15,000 viewers, which is roughly the same amount that the Malayalam film Alappuzha Gymkhana earned on its opening day. Hemanth shared this footfall number on social media, encouraging people to support the film in theaters, especially since there has been a decline in showings for Agnyathavasi after an initial surge.
In reaction to Hemanth's tweet, opinions among netizens are mixed. Some criticized Hemanth for not doing enough to promote the film beyond social media, while others pointed to the limited screenings in major areas as a factor for the low audience turnout. Additionally, the competition with Good Bad Ugly, which reportedly earned Rs 10 crore in just five days at the Karnataka box office, along with the current IPL season, were mentioned as potential reasons for the film's struggles.
The reactions to the film were mixed, with some viewers loving it while others were left unimpressed. However, many online users felt that 15,000 views could generate some solid organic buzz. A few folks expressed genuine concern about the film's future after its theatrical run, especially since OTT platforms haven't been very eager to pick up Kannada films.
On the bright side, Hemanth doesn't have to stress about this, as Zee Network has secured both the satellite and digital rights for the movie. The filmmaker decided to hold off for over a year after the film was completed, waiting for a better environment before finalizing the deal. It's still uncertain whether he’s truly ‘safe’ with these post-theatrical options, but a successful theatrical run would definitely encourage creators like him to keep investing in quality content.
