Over 7 years after it first came to theatres, Kannada superstar Kiccha Sudeep’s first collaboration with cinematographer-turned-director S Krishna, Hebbuli, will be back on the big screen. As fans eagerly await the release of the actor’s next, Max, the Hebbuli re-release is expected to give them some relief, as the action-packed drama sees Sudeep in a stylish avatar as a para commando. The film is getting a limited re-release on August 2, 2024, and advance booking for the same has already begun.

The plot of Hebbuli

Crazy Star V Ravichandran, who played Sudeep’s father in their earlier collaboration Maanikya, got to be the latter’s older brother this time around. The plot of Hebbuli revolves around para commander Ram (Sudeep) after he receives word of the death of his brother, IAS officer Satyamurthy (Ravichandran). Although Satyamurthy is believed to have committed suicide, Ram smells something fishy and decides to dig deeper and soon enough finds clues to suggest that there was foul play in his brother’s death. How he goes about avenging this murder is what Hebbuli is all about.

The film, which also stars P Ravi Shankar, Kabir Duhan Singh, Ravi Kishan, Ravi Kale, Kalyani, Avinash, Chikkanna, Anil Kumar, Sanjeev Sarovar, among others, introduced Malayalam actress Amala Paul to Kannada cinema. Hebbuli remains her only Kannada project to date.

The film, with music by Arjun Janya, was a commercial success when it released for Mahashivaratri in 2017. Since this is a limited re-release and the film may not be back in theatres in some areas, the solution for those who fancy a re-watch is to catch it on Zee5 or OTTplay Premium.

Sudeep, who has not had a theatrical release since 2022’s Vikrant Rona, is expected to bring Max to audiences in early September. There’s been no official announcement from the team to this effect, but sources say that they are working feverishly to bring it to theatres at the earliest.
