In less than two months, Harold and the Purple Crayon has made it to OTT in India after its theatrical release in August 2024. The film has been dropped on Prime Video and ZEE5 (OTTplay Premium) but is on rent at Rs. 249. The live-action feature-length directing debut of Carlos Saldanha, Harold and the Purple Crayon, had the screenplay by David Guion and Michael Handelman, and it is based on the 1955 children's book by Crockett Johnson. The film features a live-action/animation hybrid cast and includes performances by Benjamin Bottani, Tanya Reynolds, Zooey Deschanel, Jemaine Clement, Lil Rel Howery, and Zachary Levi. This book, a sequel to the first, follows Harold's adventures with his enchanted purple crayon as he grows older. When Harold finally pulls himself out of his fantasy world and into reality, he realises that he still has a lot to master.
Plot and themes of Harold and the Purple Crayon
The daring Harold (Zachary Levi) in his book can bring any painting to life. As he leaves the pages of the book behind and enters the real world, Harold discovers he has much to learn about life, including the fact that his beloved purple crayon can cause more mischief than he ever imagined. When Harold's limitless imagination gets into the wrong hands, he and his pals will need to use all their imaginations to save the real world and themselves. Film adaptations of children's books have been around for a long time, and Harold and the Purple Crayon was the first of its kind.
Earlier in an interview with Pinkvilla, Levi spoke about the film, stating that imagination is essential for Harold. Both the novel and the film rely heavily on the power of the imagination. He found great charm in the idea of Harold, despite his innocence and naivety, venturing into the real world to embark on an adventure.
Film's reception
With a production expenditure of $40 million and critical reception that was mostly negative, the film managed to earn $29.2 million.
