Adam Sandler makes his return to the golf course almost thirty years later. On Tuesday, Netflix unveiled the official trailer along with the release date for the eagerly awaited Happy Gilmore 2, a direct sequel to the 1996 sports comedy.

The trailer features the main character, Happy Gilmore, portrayed by Sandler, as he returns to the game of golf after a long hiatus following his championship victory in the original film.

“I haven't swung a club in years,” he remarks in the trailer. The official synopsis for the movie, which is scheduled to debut on Netflix on July 25, states: “Happy Gilmore returns!”

Alongside Sandler, both Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald reprise their roles as Happy's romantic interest, Virginia Venit, and his rival, Shooter McGavin, respectively.

In the trailer, Happy Gilmore expresses that he feels “a little intimidated” by the new competition. He reiterates, “I haven’t swung a club in years.”

Virginia, however, offers her support, encouraging him with the words, “We’re not done with golf. Let them see the Happy I fell in love with.”

The cast of the film features Allen Covert in the role of Otto, Dennis Dugan as Doug Thompson, Bad Bunny portraying Happy's caddie, and Kym Whitley as Bessie, a participant in Happy's support group.

Happy Gilmore 2 is filled with appearances from high-profile celebrities, including Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, Eminem, Margaret Qualley, Nick Swardson, Scott Mescudi (Kid Cudi), Benny Safdie, and Dan Patrick.

Adam Sandler on why he wanted to create a Happy Gilmore sequel

In a summer appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Sandler shared his motivation for developing a sequel to Happy Gilmore after many years. 

“Fans have been requesting a 'Happy Gilmore 2' for quite some time, and I always responded with, ‘No, I wouldn’t want to disappoint you,’” he stated during the August 2024 interview. “However, my friend Tim Herlihy and I brainstormed an idea that we are genuinely enthusiastic about.”
