Indrajit Lankesh’s return to filmmaking after the Shakeela biopic, is a project that’s very dear to him. He is launching his first-born, Samarjit Lankesh, as a leading man in cinema, with Gowri, a film he has written and produced with wife Arpita. Ever since he launched the film, Indrajit has been tight-lipped about his plans for his son’s debut, and has focused all the promotions on the young debutants dance and action skills, as well as charming good looks. As far as establishing Samarjit as a pin-up boy goes, Indrajit has succeeded.
But the doting dad that he is, the filmmaker is aware that in the current environment in Kannada cinema, content is king, and everything else is only added bonanza. Is there a great story at play and, more importantly, can Samarjit act? These are two very important questions that he needs to answer to get audiences come to the movie halls.
Today, Indrajit has finally dropped some hints about what to expect on August 15, when the film releases in theatres. Samar plays the title character Gowri, a farmer’s son from a modest background, who also harbours musical aspirations. There’s a class conflict and a love story also thrown in for good measure. The film, according to the director, is a musical, and while the trailer addresses the music aspect of the film, it is not the highlight. The focus is squarely on Samar’s onscreen presence, dialogue delivery, action and dance.
With the trailer, the filmmaker also introduces the rest of the cast, including Saanya Iyer, Sampath Maithreya, Mansi Sudhir, Rajeev Govinda Pillai, Sihi Kahi Chandru, among others, with cameos by Loose Mada Yogi, Priyanka Upendra, Akul Balaji, Chandu Gowda, etc. The film’s music score features compositions by Chandan Shetty, Jassie Gift, Shivu Beragi, Anirudh Shastry and Manu Michael. A tribute to Indrajit’s late sister Gauri, the film is based on a true story, but not hers.
