It is crystal clear from all of filmmaker Gautham Vasudev Menon’s interviews about Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse that he’s an ardent fan of Mammootty, an admiration that’s only gotten stronger after collaborating on the film that is releasing on January 23. Although Gautham and Mammootty had worked together as actors on Bazooka, directing the latter was a totally different ball game.

The Malayalam superstar consistently kept Gautham unaware of his intentions for each scene, frequently surprising the director with the subtle details he infused into the character. Gautham, who prefers not to micromanage his actors, recognized that this approach would not be suitable for an artist of Mammootty's calibre. His directorial method involves creating an environment and observing the actor's contributions; however, with Mammootty, he took a different approach. He would establish the scene without providing the actor with specific parameters, allowing for a more open-ended exploration of the performance and the camera work.

Gautham Vasudev Menon: Dominic is not a larger-than-life figure

Gautham describes Dominic as a former police officer who utilizes his skills to operate a detective agency, yet he is not depicted as a larger-than-life persona. “In investigative thrillers featuring law enforcement or detectives, characters are often exaggerated. This is not the case with Dominic. If he is struck, he will fall and may not retaliate. While he is capable of delivering a few hits, fundamentally, he is a character who can be subdued. This is a departure from the typical hero archetype, who would not accept such a scenario. In 'Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse,' there is a scene where someone successfully overpowers Dominic,” Gautham stated in an interview with One 2 Talks.

The filmmaker emphasizes that the character is portrayed with utmost realism, as he aims to avoid any semblance of implausibility. According to Gautham, Mammootty delivered an exceptional performance, ensuring that Dominic will resonate with viewers. He asserts, “Audiences will exit the theatres contemplating Dominic's next move.”
