Gautham Menon Reflects on Dominic and the Ladies' Purse's Box Office Performance

Director Gautham Vasudev Menon's newest film, Dominic and the Ladies' Purse, experienced a respectable opening at the Kerala box office on Thursday. With Mammootty in the lead role and being the acclaimed director's inaugural Malayalam project, the film generated a notable level of anticipation; however, this enthusiasm did not fully reflect in its box office performance.
In a recent discussion with OTTplay, Gautham shared his thoughts on the prevailing fixation with box office earnings and emphasized that such considerations did not influence the creation of his latest investigative thriller, which also features Gokul Suresh, Sushmitha Bhat, and Viji Venkatesh.
Gautham Menon: If numbers mattered, they wouldn’t have made Kaathal
I am immensely grateful to have Mammootty Kampany as the producers of this film. If we were to consider financial metrics, I doubt they would have produced films such as Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam and Kaathal: The Core. It seems that financial figures do not hold significant importance for them. However, it is essential to ensure that a project does not incur losses, and maintaining a harmonious relationship between the producer and director is crucial. There exists a certain standard that is influenced by financial outcomes.
The filmmaker, who achieved success with Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu in 2021, further expressed that he does not allow box-office performance to dictate the creative direction of a film. "Personally, I do not place much value on numbers. I sincerely hope that financial considerations do not hinder creativity, and during the production of this film, we did not overly focus on those aspects," he stated.

Gautham Menon: Could have gone ballistic with Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse
The director clarified that if the objective had been to attract a large audience to theaters, he would have approached the production of Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse differently. “We did not resort to excessive action sequences akin to those in Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu for this film. Such elements could have drawn in a more rowdy crowd. However, I believe that producing this film in Malayalam offers a distinct advantage, as the audience does not anticipate such theatrics. They simply desire a well-crafted, authentic film. This is why we refrained from going overboard in any aspect.”
Regarding the creation of the investigative thriller, Gautham noted that “it is not a high-budget film.” “We allocated resources according to the needs of the scenes and were pleased to invest in the necessary elements; all required equipment was provided. Considerable planning contributed to the project, allowing us to complete the film in just 45 days,” he elaborated.
