Gandhada Gudi, the hit film from 1973, featured the legendary Dr. Rajkumar alongside Sahasa Simha Dr. Vishnuvardhan in their only collaboration on screen. Directed by Vijay and produced by M P Shankar, who also had a role in the movie, this film marked Dr. Rajkumar’s 150th project and was his final work with the esteemed Narasimharaju. It was later remade in Hindi as Kartavya and dubbed in Malayalam as Chandanakaadu. Notably, Gandhada Gudi is recognized as the first Indian film focused on forest protection and wildlife conservation.

Gandhada Gudi, which enjoyed a successful 25-week run at the box office in 1973, is making a comeback. To celebrate Dr. Rajkumar’s birth anniversary on April 24, 2025, the film will return to theaters. Coincidentally, that same day marks the release of Firefly, the debut production of Dr. Rajkumar’s granddaughter, Niveditha Shivarajkumar.
In the film, Dr. Rajkumar portrays a dedicated forest officer whose efforts are thwarted by the illegal timber and poaching schemes of Dr. Vishnuvardhan’s character, who is later revealed to be his long-lost brother. For most of the story, Dr. Vishnuvardhan plays the antagonist, even attempting to take Dr. Rajkumar’s life.
A notable incident during the filming of Gandhada Gudi occurred when a prop gun was mistakenly swapped for a real one while Dr. Vishnuvardhan aimed at Dr. Rajkumar. Fortunately, he missed, but the news of the mishap caused an uproar, leading to Dr. Rajkumar's fans issuing death threats against Dr. Vishnuvardhan, who was still relatively new to the industry at that time.

Gandhada Gudi featured a talented cast including Kalpana, Balakrishna, Sampath, Advani Lakshmi Devi, Thoogudeepa Srinivas, Shakti Prasad, Tiger Prabhakar, B Jaya, and HR Sastry, among others. In 1994, director Vijay and producer MP Shankara teamed up again for a sequel titled Gandhada Gudi 2, starring Shivarajkumar and featuring a cameo by Dr Rajkumar. Years later, Dr Rajkumar’s youngest son, Puneeth Rajkumar, created a docu-feature named Gandhada Gudi, focusing on the importance of conservation as he traveled throughout Karnataka. Sadly, Puneeth passed away before he could see it released.
