Prajwal Devaraj kicked off his year with the release of Gana, directed by Hari Prasad Jakka, which hit the big screen on January 31, 2025. This film is the Kannada adaptation of Jakka's previous Telugu project, Play Back. Unfortunately, it didn't get much buzz before its release and ended up being pretty forgettable at the box office. The cast includes Vedhika, Yasha Shivakumar, Ravi Kale, Sampath Raj, and Krishi Thapanda, among others. Interestingly, it's one of just two films from 2025 that made it to OTT platforms. By February 2025, a total of 57 Kannada films had been released in theaters.

Prajwal Devaraj's new song is now available on Sun NXT

Gana has landed on Sun NXT, which also features other films led by Prajwal, such as Inspector Vikram, Gentleman, Veeram, and Abbara, among others. The film was released on March 7, 2025, coinciding with Prajwal's second theatrical release of the year, a time-loop horror flick titled Rakshasa, directed by Lohith H.

In Gana, Prajwal takes on the role of the main character, an investigative journalist who moves into an old house that surprisingly has a working landline. When the phone rings, he finds himself talking to Sujatha (Vedhika), who is not just far away but also living in 1993. As they discover they’re from different time periods, he helps her fix her future by altering events in her present, which is his past.

The movie is the newest one to dive into the ideas of parallel universes and time travel. Last year, the Kannada film Murphy tackled a similar theme, featuring a young guy from today who links up with a woman from the 90s through a radio. Before that, Priyanka Upendra’s 1980 showcased her as a writer in the 80s, who communicates with someone in the present day using a landline phone.

Gana is reportedly one of the final entries in Prajwal’s collection of what he refers to as ‘routine commercial films’. This week marks the start of a new chapter in his film career with Rakshasa, which will be followed by Karavali.
