From Rags to Riches: How a ₹3 Crore Movie Became India's Most Profitable Film of 2024
5 days ago | 5 Views
2024 proved to be a remarkable year for Indian cinema, with two films surpassing the ₹1000 crore milestone at the global box office, while another approached this impressive figure. It can be contended that the three films—Pushpa 2: The Rule, Kalki 2898 AD, and Stree 2—emerged as the most significant box office successes of the year. Nevertheless, when considering the most profitable Indian film, the title belongs to a production with a budget of merely ₹3 crore, which featured no prominent stars.
India's most profitable film of 2024
The Malayalam romantic drama "Premalu" has emerged as the most lucrative Indian film of 2024. Produced on a modest budget of merely ₹3 crore and featuring an unheralded cast, the film initially experienced a tepid reception. However, it gained significant traction through positive word of mouth. Ultimately, it amassed an impressive ₹136 crore, positioning itself among the top-grossing Malayalam films of the year. The film's profit margin of 45 times its production cost stands as the highest for any Indian film this year and ranks among the highest in history.
Premalu 3 surpassed Pushpa 2, Kalki 2898 AD, and Stree 2 in terms of performance
Premalu's remarkable profit margin of 45 times positions it as one of the most significant success stories in the history of Indian cinema. Only Secret Superstar and Jai Santoshi Maa have achieved greater box office returns relative to their production costs. Larger films are unlikely to reach such a profit margin due to their elevated production budgets. For example, Pushpa 2, which is the highest-grossing Indian film of 2024, has grossed ₹1800 crore, yet this figure represents only five times its budget of ₹350 crore. Similarly, Kalki 2898 AD's profit margin is merely double its ₹600-crore budget. While Stree 2 emerged as Bollywood's major success of the year, its gross of ₹875 crore is approximately ten times its budget of ₹90 crore.
