Due to the influx of favorable reviews circulating on social media, the anticipated Tamil film Tourist Family is generating significant expectations, even as it prepares to compete with Suriya’s Retro. Starring Sasikumar, Simran, and others, Tourist Family is set to premiere on May 1 and is directed by newcomer Abishan Jeevinth. In a promotional interview, the director disclosed that his inspiration for Tourist Family came from a particular film featuring Kamal Haasan.

Tourist Family director reveals Kamal Haasan film which inspired him to make his debut

Prior to the release of Tourist Family, the film has already garnered favorable reviews. Directed by debutant Abishan, he mentioned in a promotional interview that he drew inspiration from the 2000 Tamil comedy-drama Thenali, which features Kamal Haasan in the lead role. Notably, Kamal Haasan portrays a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee in Thenali, while the main characters in Tourist Family also exhibit a Sri Lankan Tamil accent. Expressing his admiration for Thenali, the director revealed his intention to create a sequel. 'Unfortunately, that did not materialize, and when I decided to pursue a family film, I took that inspiration and developed it in a different direction,' Abishan remarked.

Thenali can be streamed on Aha Tamil and OTTplay Premium. Directed by KS Ravikumar, the film features an ensemble cast including Kamal Haasan, Jayaram, Devayani, Jyothika, Delhi Ganesh, Charle, Ramesh Khanna, and Madhan Bob, among others. This film marks the first instance where Kamal Haasan was credited with his previous title, Ulaganayagan, which he later abandoned. The narrative follows a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee who arrives in Chennai seeking treatment for various phobias. During his journey, he develops a bond with his psychiatrist's family, which the doctor finds objectionable.
