Filmmaker Nikkhil Advani on Freedom At Midnight
In an interview, when asked if he was concerned about how viewers might react to the show's exploration of the Indian freedom struggle and partition, Nikkhil Advani said: "I don’t know why I would be concerned at all. There cannot be a second point of view on the fact that India gained independence on the 15th of August, 1947. There can’t be any debate on the fact that Partition followed right after."
Malishka Mendonsa reacts to Freedom At Midnight being politicised
Malishka Mendonsa played Sarojini Naidu in Freedom At Midnight. Recently, the director's comments about removing the religious aspect from the partition portion received backlash. Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri also called him out.
When asked if the politicization and negativity around her show affected her, Malishka said, "Has it already started? I didn't know."
She further added that this is the great that people are talking about it. "I think you should be more than welcome to talk about it. We aren't making anything fictional; a book already exists on this. We may have taken some creative liberty to humanise these parts, but the story remains intact. As for conversations, good or bad, I would just say, let it flow," she added.
Meanwhile, Freedom At Midnight also stars Rajendra Chawla in the role of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Arif Zakaria as Muhammad Ali Jinnah, Ira Dubey as Fatima Jinnah, Sidhant Gupta as Jawaharlal Nehru, Rajesh Kumar as Liaquat Ali Khan, and KC Shankar as VP Menon.
The series is streaming on SonyLIV. You can also watch it with your OTTplay Premium subscription.
