In a discussion with Peppin, the director of Yamakaathagi, he states, “We have established the setting within a village context, presenting it in a grounded manner. The work incorporates various genres, and our challenge was to create a unified and coherent experience for the audience.”
The director highlights that the primary challenge in contemporary times is attracting audiences to theatres to view films. Peppin expresses his intention to provide a genuine theatrical experience. When inquired about what makes Yamakaathagi a film worthy of the theatre, Peppin explains, "We have incorporated numerous visual layers, and due to the combination of various genres, we needed to maintain a high level of technical awareness to achieve this. However, we also aimed to avoid making it overly cinematic."
Yamakaathagi unfolds within the setting of a home where the funeral of a young woman takes place. Yet, as the spirit remains reluctant to depart, the film delves into the surrounding mystery. "The emotions run deep in a funeral setting as individuals cope with their loss. Each person may share a unique bond with the deceased. As the body refuses to leave, Yamakaathagi will investigate this dynamic," he elaborates.
Cast and crew of Yamakaathagi
The film was filmed in a village in Thanjavur, with cinematography by Sujith Sarang and editing and colouring managed by Sreejith Sarang. The cast includes actors such as Roopa Koduvayur, Geetha Kailasam, and Narendra Prasath, among others. Peppin notes, "We aimed to include more characters as the narrative revolves around a grieving household. Approximately 90% of the cast comes from a theatrical background, which has been incredibly beneficial for me as a first-time director. They are committed to delivering their best once they understand my expectations."
Identifying himself as a lover of commercial cinema, Peppin acknowledges the challenges of executing a film with commercial appeal for the first time. "Coming from a village, I prefer to start with my strengths and roots. When I have a clear vision as a director, I can effectively support my story. That said, the film maintains a sense of balance."
The music for Yamakaathagi is composed by Jecin George. The film is produced by Srinivasarao Jalakam and co-produced by Ganapathi Reddy, with the release date yet to be determined.
