The beginning of the year has proven to be rather uneventful for Kannada cinema in terms of OTT releases. Numerous films that were eagerly awaited and reportedly secured digital streaming partnerships have yet to debut on OTT platforms in January 2025. The most recent significant Kannada original release on OTT was Shivarajkumar’s Bharathi Ranagal, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video during the Christmas season of the previous year.

The postponement of films such as Kiccha Sudeep’s Max and Upendra’s UI is being linked to the upcoming release of Pushpa 2 The Rule on January 30 on Netflix, which will be available in five languages. However, the availability of HD prints of both Kannada films online raises concerns.

Here’s a look at the Kannada films that are expected to be on OTT in February 2025

Choo Mantar

Sharan's horror comedy, Choo Mantar, has recently marked 25 days at the box office, which the team considers a theatrical triumph. In the film, Sharan portrays an exorcist summoned to investigate supernatural occurrences in a remote mansion located in Uttarakhand. Directed by Navaneeth, known for his work in Karvva, the cast also includes Aditi Prabhudeva, Chikkanna, Meghana Gaonkar, and Prabhu Mundkur, among others.

Max

The announcement regarding the release of Kiccha Sudeep’s film Max was reportedly made hastily for Christmas 2024, following a decision by producer Kalaippuli S Thanu. Sources indicate that Thanu would retain the revenue from the digital and satellite rights agreements, while the lead actor would benefit from the box office earnings. It has been reported that the satellite and digital rights for Max were sold to Zee Network, with expectations for the film to premiere on Zee5 in January. However, this did not occur, leading to renewed hopes for its availability for streaming shortly.

UI

There was considerable uncertainty surrounding the streaming rights for Upendra's UI, with initial reports suggesting that Sun Network, which features several films by the actor-director, had acquired them. Nevertheless, the team clarified these claims, indicating that the rights are actually held by Zee Network. Recently, Zee announced that the television premiere is forthcoming, yet there has been no information regarding the OTT release, leading to further speculation that the digital rights may still be available or possibly belong to another service. It is worth noting that Zee has primarily focused on acquiring television rights for some time.

Aaram Aravinda Swamy

Aniish's romantic comedy, Aaram Aravinda Swamy, reportedly secured an OTT partnership some time ago, with sources indicating that the film has entered into a pay-per-view agreement. Despite having been over a month since its theatrical debut, the film has not yet become available for streaming.

Maryade Prashne

RJ Pradeepa's extensive relationship with Zee Network has led to speculation regarding the acquisition of his debut feature production by the platform. While there has been no official confirmation, there are indications that the film, featuring actors such as Rakesh Adiga, Prabhu Mundkur, Suneel Raoh, and Poorna Mysuru, is expected to be available on the platform shortly.
