Farhan Akhtar's official announcement about Don 3, starring Ranveer Singh, received mixed reactions. Fans of the Don franchise expected Shah Rukh Khan (who did Don and Don 2) to be a part of the third installment as well. However, they were disheartened upon learning that SRK was replaced by Ranveer in Don 3. Months after the film's announcement, Farhan revealed that he considered Shah Rukh for Don 3. But he hit a roadblock while writing Don 3 with the superstar in it.

Shah Rukh Khan was considered for Don 3

In an interview with Faye D'souza, Farhan Akhtar admitted he initially thought of working on Don 3 with Shah Rukh Khan. The filmmaker and producer said, "When I first started thinking about doing a Don 3, I mean, obviously, I thought of writing something with Shah Rukh in it, but somehow we just couldn’t find the right place to be able to take the story to. We couldn’t find common ground on it – so that didn’t happen."

Akhtar further considered rethinking as to what he wanted to do with Don 3. After some introspection, Farhan started writing the third installment of Don. That's when the filmmaker/producer realised the film needed a younger actor. And he eventually thought of Ranveer Singh to be the right actor to do the film.

Ranveer Singh on taking the Don legacy forward

After Ranveer Singh joined Don 3, he penned a lengthy note on social media about taking the legacy forward. "I understand what a great responsibility it is to be a part of the ‘Don’ dynasty. I hope the audience gives me a chance and showers me with love, the way they have for numerous characters over the past so many years (sic)," a part of his post read.

Ranveer came on board for the film last year in August. And in February this year, Kiara Advani joined the star cast of Don 3 as the female lead.
