Heads up! Spoilers for You Season 5 coming your way!
Penn Badgley reprises his role as Joe Goldberg in New York City for You season 5. The dangerously obsessed bibliophile comes back to his roots but in a different persona, due to his marriage to billionaire CEO Kate Lockwood, portrayed by Charlotte Ritchie. In this season, he appears as a loving husband and father. Could his terrifying history jeopardize his new existence? As the psychological thriller's season 5 premieres on Netflix on April 24, audiences have mixed reactions in their reviews.
Reddit users are not pleased that Joe sees himself as a victim
Reddit users believed that the show could have improved. One user commented, "I feel like it could have been done better. Some subplots should have been removed. It might have been interesting to see more of him on trial, in jail, or undergoing analysis. I think much of the TikTok material and the emphasis on Bronte/Louise was odd. "
The fans were dissatisfied that Joe considered himself the victim until the conclusion.
"That's what was lacking lol, Joe never really confronted his crimes. Even at the end, he still believes he's the victim. They should have stripped him bare, forcing him to confront the repercussions of his actions. "
Another Reddit user supported the ending and stated, "That’s the point. Joe will NEVER confront his crimes directly. He will perpetually deceive himself and gaslight forever. He will do it on the stand in court, under threat, it’s irrelevant. Because he’s too entrenched in his psychosis to take any accountability. That may be disappointing to us, but it’s true to the character. Trial scenes or anything else would waste the audience's time because he will never provide us with what we seek. Therefore, it’s wise to finally focus on the victims and allow him to fade into obscurity. Nevertheless, people still have this wish fulfillment fantasy. From everyone’s reactions, I believe the final line is prophetic. Perhaps he wasn’t the issue; maybe it’s us. . . "
A person remarked, “Started off slow but overall better than season 4 and a tidy conclusion. I will say I didn’t like that Bronte became a main character. I would’ve preferred more emphasis on the existing characters. I was let down that she was the one who ultimately took him down. And I found it strange she had a brief summary type thing at the end (about finding herself etc) because who is she? ? ? Lol. I was nearly trembling with excitement when Marienne appeared to join Kate and Nadia, believing they would team up to take him down. And Marienne looked fierce! ”
Critics were annoyed with how Kate's character was shown as a 'redeemable hero'
"Thank you! ! I believed I was the only one who felt extremely frustrated with how they depicted her as some kind of redeemable savior. She murdered children in the past and authorized a hit on a relative due to the anxiety of it being exposed. The fact that she somehow survived being shot and struck with a mallet while being consumed by flames in the basement was also ludicrous. I enjoyed this season and Joe's conclusion; it provides us closure while also playing it somewhat cautiously for those who still desired Joe to be alive. I just felt that they entirely missed the mark on certain plot points and character endings. It’s like a 7. 5/10 to be honest," the user wrote.
You season 5
Following his adventures in London, Joe has returned to New York after three years alongside his wife Kate. Kate now holds the position of CEO at the Lockwood Corporation, and the pair is enjoying a luxurious lifestyle. After revealing his history of murder to Kate, her surprisingly composed reaction suggests that she may possess a similar darkness. Madeline Brewer portrays Bronte on the series, while Anna Camp takes on a dual role as Joe's sisters-in-law, Raegan and Maddie Lockwood. The remainder of the cast features Griffin Matthews as Teddy Lockwood and Nava Mau as Detective Marquez.
