The narrative of the film revolves around Pooja (Rani Mukerji), who attempts suicide when her boyfriend hilts her. She is then saved by Raj (Salman Khan), a struggling singer. Her best friend Janhvi (Preity Zinta) and Raj take care of Pooja, who is now in a coma. Upon recovery, Pooja falls for Raj, but he is now in love with Jahnvi.

Har Dil Jo Pyaar Karega was a remake of 1997 Malayalam film 'Chandralekha'. The film starred Mohanlal and was inspired by the 1995 film 'While You Were Sleeping.' The film also starred Shah Rukh Khan in a cameo appearance. His character was an extension of his iconic character, Rahul, from Karan Johar's film 'Kuch Kuch Hota Hai'.

When the film was released in theatres in 2000, it was the 7th biggest grosser of the year. Made on a budget of Rs. 13 crore, the film earned Rs. 32.4 crore globally.
