The box office success of actor-director Prithviraj Sukumaran’s latest film, Empuraan, the second part of the Lucifer trilogy, has continued to thrive over the extended weekend, despite the controversy surrounding its perceived political messages, which primarily affects the Malayalam version. The film, which premiered in theaters worldwide on March 27, 2025, has reportedly surpassed the Rs 200 crore milestone, with the majority of earnings stemming from the Malayalam edition.
Empuraan joins Aavesham and Premalu
The financial contributions from the dubbed versions have been minimal, with the Kannada version performing the poorest. Nevertheless, the Karnataka box office has still contributed Rs 10 crore to Empuraan's total. The Malayalam original has performed exceptionally well in the state, making it only the third Malayalam film to reach this revenue level, alongside Aavesham and Premalu.
Hombale Films is responsible for distributing Empuraan in Karnataka, and industry analysts indicate that they are still far from breaking even, with a net figure of Rs 15 crore needed to achieve this. With no significant releases scheduled for the weekend of April 4, Empuraan is expected to maintain its dominance, especially since Salman Khan’s Sikandar has underperformed and Vikram’s Veera Dheera Sooran has garnered lower earnings despite favorable reviews.
While collections for Empuraan are anticipated to decline starting April 1, the filmmakers plan to introduce a more audience-friendly version in theaters, featuring several edits and mutes. This change is expected to draw viewers back to cinemas to experience the original version. Reports suggest that there will be 17 modifications, which may only total a few minutes, although the filmmakers have yet to confirm these details.
In response to criticisms from right-wing political parties and their supporters, lead actor Mohanlal issued an apology on social media, stating that it was never his intention to cause any offense. Prithviraj also shared the same message without adding any personal comments, and writer Murali Gopy has refrained from making any statements as well.
