Empuraan box office earnings on its opening day: The thriller film featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Mohanlal made a strong debut at the box office, premiering in theaters globally on March 27. The film broke multiple pre-sale records, generating an impressive Rs 22 crore on its first day, according to Sacnilk. Previously, Tamil actor Vijay's Leo held the record for the largest opening in Kerala. However, Empuraan has surpassed Leo's record and has also added over 500 additional screenings. Let us analyze the box office performance of Empuraan on its first day.
Empuraan day 1 box office earnings
Empuraan, the sequel to the hit film Lucifer, was released in theaters on Thursday. As the most anticipated Malayalam film of the year, it garnered Rs 22 crore in net collections across India, encompassing all languages. It is important to highlight that Prithviraj Sukumaran’s film was also released in various international markets, including the Middle East, the United States, and Australia.

Empuraan was released in several languages, including Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi, and Tamil. The original Malayalam version achieved the highest box office earnings, totaling Rs 19.45 crore. Among the other South Indian language versions, the Telugu adaptation surpassed Rs 1 crore in box office collections. Vijay's film, Leo, recorded the largest opening in Kerala, amassing Rs 12 crore. While the Rs 19.45 crore collection pertains to the Malayalam version, which was also released outside Kerala, it is anticipated that Prithviraj's film has outperformed Leo's figures within the state.
All theaters across Kerala experienced strong attendance, with Kochi leading in IMAX 2D screenings, achieving full occupancy at 100 percent, followed closely by Thiruvananthapuram. Additionally, online tracking services reported that 516 extra late-night screenings have been scheduled for Empuraan, surpassing the previous record of 313 shows set by Leo.

Empuraan gets mixed reviews
The remarkable figures for Empuraan on its opening day were anticipated, given the record bookings on BookMyShow. However, the film, featuring Mohanlal and telling the story of Stephen Nedumpally or Khureshi Ab’raam alongside Zayed Masood (portrayed by Prithviraj Sukumaran), received a mixed reception from critics on Thursday. While the film was praised for its polished production and stylish visuals, the storyline did not garner the same level of acclaim.
It remains to be seen how the film will fare in the upcoming days, as this will determine whether Empuraan can replicate the success of Lucifer, which was a major hit upon its release in 2019. Lucifer is available for viewing on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium at special discounted rates.
