L2 Empuraan, starring Mohanlal, has already become the highest grossing Malayalam film so far in 2025. However, with the controversy and the makers modifying the film, Empuraan has been seeing a dip in collection. The domestic box office collection across all languages stands at Rs 88 crore so far with its one week of collection. The Mohanlal-starrer had one more week to go, before the next set of films release for the Vishu weekend.

The newly launched L2 Empuraan marks the second installment in the action thriller trilogy Lucifer, featuring Mohanlal in the lead role. The screenplay is crafted by Murali Gopi, with direction by actor Prithviraj Sukumaran. L2 Empuraan premiered in theaters on March 27 and, after an eight-day theatrical run, has garnered Rs 88 crore at the domestic box office to date.

L2 Empuraan became embroiled in controversy after it faced criticism from right-wing groups due to specific scenes in the film that resembled the riots that occurred in Gujarat in 2002. In response to the backlash, the filmmakers implemented several changes, and Mohanlal issued a lengthy post expressing his apologies for the situation.

Since the implementation of these cuts, the film has experienced a decline in revenue. On the seventh day, the Malayalam version generated approximately Rs 5.65 crore, but this figure fell to Rs 3.91 crore the next day. Additionally, Empuraan is anticipated to face competition from the Vishu releases scheduled for next week, including the Mammootty-led film Bazooka.

Empuraan will not have IMAX screenings anymore

In addition to its standard release, Empuraan was also made available in IMAX. However, the IMAX version had to be discontinued due to the team's modifications, which would require a significant financial investment to re-upload the edited version for IMAX.

It is noteworthy that Empuraan was announced as the first Malayalam film to be released in IMAX. As a sequel to Lucifer, which can be streamed on SonyLiv and OTTplay Premium at promotional rates, Empuraan boasts a stellar cast, including Prithviraj Sukumaran, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Indrajith Sukumaran, Pranav Mohanlal, among others.
