Kangana Ranaut's Emergency is among the most anticipated films of 2025. The film encountered a delay in its release schedule, initially slated for September 6, 2024. This postponement occurred after the Central Board of Film Certification rescinded its certificate following several petitions. The anticipation is now coming to an end, as the actress's directorial debut is scheduled to premiere in theatres on January 17. Nevertheless, in a recent interview, Kangana expressed that opting for a theatrical release for Emergency was a misguided choice. The reasons behind this statement are worth exploring.
Kangana Ranaut on Emergency's theatrical release
In a discussion with, Kangana Ranaut expressed her concerns regarding the postponement of the Emergency film release. She admitted to feeling 'scared' due to the prolonged period during which the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) declined to grant certification for the film.
"I believed it was an erroneous choice to premiere it in cinemas. I felt I could have secured a more advantageous arrangement on OTT platforms. Additionally, I would have avoided the censorship process, and my film would not have been subjected to such scrutiny. I was uncertain about what the CBFC would choose to cut and what they would allow us to retain," she stated.
Kangana Ranaut on directing Emergency
The actress acknowledged that she has made numerous poor decisions across various aspects of her career, one of which was her choice to direct Emergency.
She expressed that she had taken this opportunity for granted. "I have previously mentioned the film Kissa Kursi Ka, which remains unseen by audiences to this day, as all prints were destroyed at the time. Additionally, there has been a lack of films focusing on Mrs. Gandhi. I believe that today’s audience will be astonished to learn how she evolved into the figure she became, especially considering she served as Prime Minister three times. I underestimated the significance of the subject and thought I could successfully navigate the challenges of creating a film about Emergency," she remarked.
Emergency stars Kangana as PM Indira Gandhi. The film also stars Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and Satish Kaushik in key roles. The film will be released in cinemas on January 17.
