The trailer of Emergency, featuring Kangana Ranaut, is finally out and it shows us the journey of former PM Indira Gandhi from the chair to her assassination. The promo shows us the charisma of Indira Gandhi, how she had a hold over Indians and what led to her downfall (if that is what you can even call it). Kangana brings out the character of Indira Gandhi alive with the trailer, with many known actors joining in as popular personalities of the time.

Kashmir discussed

A state which is discussed till date, was discussed even back then. The trailer tells us that Indira Gandhi made sure there isn't another Kashmir. This is a reminder of the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits.

Further, we get to see the opposition having strong viewpoints on Indira Gandhi and openly giving her tags like 'gungi gudiya' (a hearing-impaired doll). She was judged for taking the seat from her father, Jawaharlal Nehru.

Back then too, Pakistan and India were at war and it was at peak owing to the partition. During her reign, Pakistan attacked India and she had a decision to make.

Kangana Ranaut's accent

Kangana started speaking with an accent, the reason for which is still unclear. As for the former PM's knowledge in languages, she was well-versed with some of the most popular languages now. Indira Gandhi could speak English, Hindi, French, German, Persian, Punjabi, Tamil and Konkani fluently and she had knowledge of Urdu and Bengali languages.

Sam Manekshaw

Milind Soman plays the role of Sam Manekshaw in the film. Indira Gandhi and Manekshaw were close associates, to the extent that their equation was touted controversial too.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Talpade is seen in the role of Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who has been associated with the opposition party, BJP. He was elected the PM twice, in 1996 as well as from 1998 to 2004.

The darkest times

The controversial Shimla agreement is discussed. It is called India's biggest loss. Of course, the railway strike could not be ignored either. And obviously, Sanjay Gandhi is also discussed. This happens between Mahima Chaudhary and Kangana.

There was also a time when every cabinet member left Indira Gandhi's side. All of the events paved way for the dark chapter, Emergency. The actions taken were and still are highly controversial. The trailer also promises to explore Indira's side, for she is seen getting emotional realizing all the hate she has received over the years.

The promo ends with a hint of Indira Gandhi's assassination. Khalistan, still operational, is touched upon.

Emergency is directed and produced by Kangana Ranaut. It will release in theatres on September 6.
