Kangana Ranaut on directing Emergency

In a previous interview with News18, Kangana Ranaut acknowledged that she has made numerous poor decisions throughout her career, with directing the film Emergency being one of them.

She confessed to having taken the project lightly, stating, "I have mentioned before the film Kissa Kursi Ka, which remains unseen by audiences to this day, as all its prints were destroyed at the time. Additionally, there have been very few films made about Mrs. Gandhi. After viewing Emergency, the current generation may be astonished to learn how she evolved into the person she became, considering she served as Prime Minister three times. I underestimated the significance of this subject and thought I could successfully create a film about Emergency without consequence," she remarked.

Emergency features Kangana in the role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, alongside a cast that includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Ashok Chhabra, Mahima Chaudhry, Milind Soman, Vishak Nair, and Satish Kaushik in prominent roles. The film premiered in theaters on January 17.

The political biographical drama focuses on the 21-month period between 1975 and 1977, during which the late Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared a state of emergency throughout India.

In the film, Kangana portrays former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, while Anupam Kher takes on the role of Jayaprakash Narayan, who notably corresponded with her through a letter from prison. Shreyas Talpade appears as the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and Milind Soman depicts Field Marshal Sam Manekshaw, who inquired whether she desired to engage in war.
