The popular Malayalam film, Devadoothan, is scheduled to be released in theatres once more. On July 26, the film, which starred Mohanlal in the title role, will be released on big screens all over the world. Nevertheless, reports have it that the film will not be released in the GCC for unspecified reasons. After the 1995 film Spadikam, this is the second movie starring the Malayalam superstar to be re-released.
Devadoothan to re-release worldwide, except GCC
Director Sibi Malayil earlier announced the film's re-release at a press conference. He assured the media in a statement that a revised version of the movie would be making its theatre debut. With the exception of Gulf nations, it will also be screened on large screens outside of India. This is presumably the result of censorship issues.
Interestingly, the film was a total commercial failure when it debuted in 2001. However, viewers gave the movie overwhelmingly positive reviews after it aired on television and was made available on DVD. Mohanlal explained to the media why the film's 2001 theatrical run was so disappointing during a press conference on July 9 in Kochi. "Devadoothan was made way ahead of time. This may contribute to the lack of theatre attention it has gotten. Perhaps the audience at the time didn't find it believable either," he said.
Plot of Devadoothan
In the mystery thriller, Jaya Prada, Janardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayalakshmi, Murali, Jagadish, and Vineeth Kumar have significant roles. The film revolves around the story of Vishal Krishnamoorthy, who was expelled from college after being found not guilty of playing a musical instrument known as Seven Bells. His once promising future was ruined by the incident. A few years later, he receives an invitation from the college principal to supervise a musical performance that is going to happen there. Vishal chooses to solve the Seven Bells' riddle, which he believes can be solved on its own, after returning.
