Devadoothan re-release: The Mohanlal-starrer classic will hit the big screen again soon

Malayalam cult classic film, Devadoothan, is all set for theatrical release once again. The movie, which starred Mohanlal in the lead role, will hit the big screen on July 26. This is the second film of the Malayalam superstar that is getting a re-release, after his 1995 film, Spadikam.

The film's re-release was announced by director Sibi Malayil during a press conference earlier. In an address to the media, he promised that the film would be returning to theatres in a revised and polished version.

All about Mohanlal’s Devadoothan

Mohanlal, Jaya Prada, Janardhanan, Jagathy Sreekumar, Vijayalakshmi, Murali, and Vineeth Kumar play important roles in the mystery thriller. For the movie, Raghunath Paleri wrote the screenplay. The original soundtrack and score for this film, which is still highly praised by viewers, were composed by Vidyasagar.

The story of Vishal Krishnamoorthy, who was expelled from college for playing a musical device known as Seven Bells—an offence for which he was found not guilty—is central to the movie. The incident ruined his bright and promising future. Years later, the college principal invites him to oversee a musical performance that is scheduled to take place there. After making his way back, Vishal decides to solve the Seven Bells' riddle, which he claims can be solved on its own.

Devadoothan’s lacklustre performance in theatres

When the movie came out in 2001, it was a complete commercial bust. But after airing on television and being released on DVD, the film was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews from audiences. It has also become more well-known among young people after being made available on YouTube.

At a press conference held in Kochi yesterday (July 9), Mohanlal gave an explanation to the media regarding the film's underwhelming 2001 theatrical run. "Devadoothan was significantly early. This might be a part of the reason why it hasn't received much theatre attention. Maybe it didn't seem plausible to the audience at the time either," he remarked.
