Devadoothan, the mystery musical drama film which stars Mohanlal in the lead role, is gearing up for a worldwide re-release. The Sibi Malayil directorial, which was originally released in 2000, is set to hit the theatres yet again on July 26, 2024. As reported earlier, the much-loved film is set to be released in the remastered 4K format. As per the reports, director Sibi Malayil and his team have made some major changes to Devadoothan and its narrative, as the movie hit the theatres 24 years after its original release.

Devadoothan re-release print has a lesser runtime?

If the recent updates are to be believed, director Sibi Malayil and his team have made some major changes in the narrative of the Mohanlal starrer. According to the reports, the veteran filmmaker has always been unhappy with some of the sequences in Devadoothan. So, Sibi Malayil went ahead and trimmed most of those portions (around 30 minutes) which were solely included in the film to please the Mohanlal fans, from the remastered 4K version. The grapevine suggests that Devadoothan 4K version will have a lesser screentime, due to the same reason.

Sibi Malayil about ‘altering’ Devadoothan’s story for Mohanlal

In an interview with The New Indian Express, Sibi Malayil revealed that Devadoothan’s story was initially different. The original story was written differently and unsuitable for Mohanlal. The initial version of the film had a group of teenagers in the lead roles and was supposed to be made in another language. However, the film's producer wanted to cast Mohanlal in the lead role and convinced Sibi Malayil to rework the script in a way that suited the superstar after a lot of discussions.

The narrative was altered so much to fit into Mohanlal’s superstar image. This included adding an insignificant backstory, songs, and fight sequences. For the uninitiated, the makers even included a romantic subplot and a duet song for Mohanlal’s character Vishal Krishnamurthy, and the character Sneha, played by Vijayalakshmi. However, the ‘Mathappoothiri’ which is composed by Vidyasagar and sung by MG Sreekumar-Sujatha Mohan duo, was eventually not included in the film.
