Despite Success of Manjummel Boys and The Goat Life, Mollywood Suffers Major Losses

Reflecting on the year 2024, one could conclude that the Malayalam film industry performed more favourably than many others, producing notable films that attracted significant attention. Nevertheless, reports from IE indicate that the Kerala Film Producers’ Association issued a statement that presents a starkly contrasting perspective.
Mollywood in ₹700 crore loss
Numerous films such as Manjummel Boys, The Goat Life, Aavesham, Premalu, and ARM have achieved significant success this year, each surpassing ₹100 crore, thereby establishing themselves as the highest-grossing films in the industry. Additionally, titles like Kishkinda Kaandam, Guruvayur Ambalanadayil, and Varshangalkku Sesham have also performed well, generating over ₹75 crore.
Nevertheless, the producers' association has indicated that only 26 out of the 199 Malayalam films released this year were deemed successful. With the overall production expenditure for these films reaching ₹1000 crore, only ₹300 crore was recouped, leading to a substantial loss of ₹700 crore. The rising costs associated with film production and actors' salaries have been identified as contributing factors to this financial shortfall.
Furthermore, the producers' association emphasized the necessity of attracting audiences back to theatres by 2025. In 2024, Mollywood experienced a wave of re-releases, with films such as Manichitrathazhu, Devadoothan, and Valiyettan capturing the interest of new viewers. As the year draws to a close, Unni Mukundan’s Marco continues to perform reasonably well at the box office, while Mohanlal’s Barroz faces challenges in maintaining its momentum.
Mollywood’s highest-grosses in 2024
According to Sacnilk, the film Manjummel Boys generated a net revenue of ₹141.61 crore in India and ₹240.5 crore globally. Aadujeevitham - The Goat Life achieved ₹85.01 crore in India and ₹157.35 crore worldwide.
Aavesham recorded earnings of ₹85.15 crore in India and ₹154.79 crore internationally, while Premalu garnered ₹75.37 crore in India and ₹131.18 crore globally. ARM accumulated ₹63.99 crore in India and ₹107.3 crore worldwide.
With several significant films featuring Mohanlal and Mammootty scheduled for release next year, it will be interesting to observe their performance.
