Despicable Me 4 plot summary

When Gru's former adversary Maxime Le Mal (Ferrell) pursues vengeance, the repentant supervillain and secret agent moves his family to a safe home. In the background, we see Gru's family settling into their new life, the adolescent next-door neighbour Poppy Prescott (King) aspiring to be just like Gru, and a gang of his minions (Coffin) transforming into superheroes.

Gru, everyone's favourite former supervillain turned Anti-Villain League agent, is back in Illumination's Despicable Me 4 for an exciting and daring new era of Minions mayhem, marking the first Despicable Me film in seven years.

Maxime Le Mal (Will Ferrell) and his femme fatale girlfriend Valentina (Sofia Vergara) pose a fresh threat to Gru and his family, forcing them to flee. Steve Coogan is back as Silas Ramsbottom, while Pierre Coffin is back as the Minions' legendary voice actor.

Box office performance

Despicable Me 4 had its world debut on July 3, 2024. The film, which grossed $847.4 million worldwide, became the third highest-grossing film of 2024 despite receiving mixed reviews.

On day one, the film grossed $27 million, and on day two, it brought in $20.4 million. It topped the box office with an opening weekend total of $75 million and a total of $122.6 million over the course of the regular three days. The following weekend, Despicable Me 4 maintained its lead with $43.6 million. Second place went to Twisters in the film's third weekend with $24.4 million, and Deadpool & Wolverine and Twisters tied for third place in the fourth weekend with $14.6 million.

The film had a strong opening weekend in several countries, breaking records for the franchise in a few of them. However, in many places where it was released before the US date, it was second at the box office, behind Inside Out 2, which hindered its international success.
