It's been 13 years since the release of Desi Boyz, the film that marked the reunion of Akshay Kumar and John Abraham after Garam Masala (2005). Directed by Rohit Dhawan, son of David Dhawan, the film is a romantic comedy that came out in 2011. Cast members also include Deepika Padukone and Chitrangada Singh, while Sanjay Dutt makes a lengthy cameo appearance. On November 25, 2011, the film received mixed reviews and was considered an average financial success.

Plot summary of Desi Boyz

In 2009, amidst the global financial crisis, Nick Mathur (John Abraham) and Jerry Patel (Akshay Kumar) are comfortably living in their luxurious London flat. Nick, buoyed by his recent bonus, his prosperous investment banking position, and his lovely fiancée Radhika (Deepika Padukone), feels confident, while Jerry, accustomed to subsisting on his best friend Nick, thrives in the recession. However, unexpected challenges are an inevitable part of life. After Nick is abruptly fired due to a workplace downsizing, Jerry and Nick no longer exchange pleasantries. Social services have informed Jerry that, as the local guardian, he must place his nephew Veer (Virej Dasani) in a foster home unless he secures permanent employment.

Two guys in Desi Boyz are incentivised to do something out of the ordinary in order to get a quick fix, but the consequences drive a wedge between them and put their friendship to the test.

Inspiration behind Desi Boyz

According to reports, Desi Boyz was influenced by the fallout from the deception perpetrated by numerous Western universities, including Tri Valley University, Herguan University, London Metropolitan University, and University of Navarra, which affected thousands of Indian students.

For Deepika Padukone, it was her first appearance alongside John Abraham, while for Chitrangada Singh, it was her first commercial role opposite Akshay Kumar.

CBFC rating and reception

Despite the producers' hopes for a U/A certificate, the Central Board of Film Certification gave Desi Boyz an A (adults only) rating.

With its opening weekend domestic total of Rs 275 million, Desi Boyz had a better-than-average debut. The overall verdict for the film was "Average." Considering it unexpectedly received an 'A' rating from the Central Board of Film Certification, its box office collections were far lower than anticipated.
