Plot inspired by a real-life heist

The narrative draws inspiration from the Antwerp diamond heist of 2003 and centers on a sheriff from the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department who tracks a fugitive across Europe in hopes of locating a potential accomplice involved in the crime. The film premiered in U.S. theaters through Lionsgate on January 10, 2025, and achieved a global box office total of $57 million, despite receiving critical praise.

Crime thriller plot overview

In Europe, Big Nick has reignited his chase of Donnie, who is entrenched in the criminal realm of the Panther Mafia and diamond smugglers. As they concoct an audacious plan to heist diamonds from the largest exchange in the world, the pursuit escalates, and the stakes of deception, power, and survival grow increasingly perilous. This gripping crime thriller showcases the underworld at its most brutal, with law enforcement closing in. Who will ultimately emerge victorious?

In January 2025, Butler stated, "I will not wait anymore," thereby confirming the commencement of production on a third film and partially acknowledging the seven-year delay. According to Gudegast, the studio had received a proposal for a potential third installment, and the success of the second film hinged on this development.

Future sequels and global settings

Gudegast revealed intentions to produce at least two additional sequels later that month, stating that the script for the third installment had been completed. This upcoming film will focus on real-life heists that took place in different regions around the globe; the third movie is set in Africa, followed by films in Brazil, and concluding with the final chapter in Southeast Asia.

The studio intends to commence filming the third installment prior to 2026. In the same month, Lionsgate officially greenlit the production of the third film. Gerard Butler will return as both producer and actor, and O'Shea Jackson, Jr. is said to be in discussions to join the cast. This film is a joint effort involving Tucker Tooley Entertainment, G-BASE Productions, Lionsgate Films, and Christian Gudegast, who will also take on the role of director.
